Very interesting discussion to back up a really thought-provoking article.

B+W Geezer’s point about buying a £3m player got me thinking too. I’d never thought of it that way.

George is right about Etuhu. Playing devil’s advocate, now….

Buy one of these blokes for 3-ish million and give them a 3 yr contract at the going rate for a mature prem pro *and* get three seasons of 30-ish prem games out of them (i.e. the signing comes off) and that’s costing in the order of 100,000 per match all-in. Gulp.

Take the Wenger route and you might fund 5 such players for three years (guessing here the money you can get away with paying club and young aspirant). If one is a winner you can sell him to recoup your investment. And even if none proves an absolute stunner, you still need only 90 matches between them over the three seasons to match the Simon Davies route.

Dull but true: a mixture of both approaches makes sense.

Brilliant stuff. You hit the nail right on the head. Your point on Wenger was excellent, he’s definitely lost his first mover advantage in this area, especially in Africa.

A brilliant piece. Not quite at the failure level there are also those who had lost their way a bit: Simon Davies, Danny Murphy, Aaron Hughes even. Less than five million between them.

If there is real quality there, with personal baggage less than Joey Bartonesque, then, you’re right, we have the environment in which it may re-emerge.

Your argument in general makes sense plus is fun to read.
